Vyse, Sons & Co.: History

The Company

In 1848[1] the partnership between Thomas Vyse, his three sons: Richard, Charles and Henry was dissolved.  That year the company was known simply as Thomas Vyse merchants with four businesses, two in London at 3 Cripplegate-buildings and 76 Wood-street, one in Luton, Bedfordshire and another in New York, USA.  Thomas Vyse establishedText, letter

Description automatically generated the business as a straw hat manufacturer at 106 Wood Street in Cheapside at least 46 years earlier because it was first listed in London City directories in 1802[2].  According to the 1814[3] trade card seen here, it was located at Holborn Hill that year.  In 1825[4] the firm was listed as a straw hat manufacturer at 59 Holborn Bridge and a leghorn merchant at 104 Wood Street, Cheapside.  By 1835[5] the firm had expanded considerable with operations added in Luton, Bedfordshire, Signa, Italy (near Florence) and New York.  Several of Thomas’s sons assisted him in the firm’s foreign operations.  In fact, two of his sons died while living and working there, Frederick Vyse in 1840 in Florence, Italy and William Vyse in 1843 in New York.  Presumable the partnership which began around 1845[6] ended in 1848 because Thomas wanted to take a break from the business as he was 66 years old that year or he felt it was time for his sons to take over.   According to city directories, the firm was listed simply as Thomas Vyse in 1845[7] but became Thomas Vyse & Sons in 1850[8].

A new partnership was formed in 1853[9] and the company became known as Vyse & Sons.  Richard Vyse was the senior and principal partner, his brother Henry Vyse was second, their cousin John Reynolds was third and another brother Thomas Andrew Vyse was fourth.  Richard was responsible for the Luton side of the business and Henry for the London operations.  Thomas Andrew handled the New York branch most likely because he was familiar with international trade having spent time in Italy and New York earlier while working for his father.  Originally the new partnership was to be for a five-year period, however in 1855[10] Richard died unexpectedly at age 48[11].  After his death the partnership continued with Henry as the senior partner, John Reynolds second and Thomas Andrew third.  Then in 1859[12] Richard Vyse’s son Edmund Waller Vyse and a new partner George Pope Thirkell were added.  The partnership between these five individuals continued until 1864[13].  In the 1860[14]city directory the company was listed as Vyse & Sons.

When the next partnership was formed in 1864[15], the firm’s name was changed to Vyse, Sons & Co. because that was the way it appeared in the 1865[16] London directory, the first time it was listed as such.  Now there were six partners involved with the company and they were ranked in the following order based on the level of profits assigned to them: Henry Vyse, George Pope Thirkell, John Reynolds, Edmund Waller Vyse, Howard Vyse (Thomas Andrew Vyse’s son) and Francis Thirkell (George Pope Thirkell’s brother).  A few months after forming this new partnership, Thomas Andrew Vyse was reinstated as a partner, however he retired in 1865[17] taking the New York business with him.  As a result, the 1865[18] London city directory no longer listed the company as having a business in New York.  Four years later in 1869[19] John Reynolds retired as well.  In the 1870[20] London Post Office directory the firm was listed in three places in the directory’s commercial section as follows:

·       Vyse, Sons & Co. merchants & manufacturers of straw hats, millinery, artificial flowers, feathers, mantles, babylinen & ladies’ underclothing, 76 Wood street EC; manufactories at Luton, Beds; St. Albans, Herts; Prato, Italy.

·       Thirkell, Francis, merchant, see Vyse, Sons & Co

·       Thirkell, George Pope, merchant, see Vyse, Sons & Co

Description automatically generatedHenry Vyse was the business’s leader for a period of time during the 1860’s, 1870’s and 1880’s assisted by the Thirkell brothers.  Sometime between 1880[21] and 1885[22] the firm added shops at 6 & 7 William Street in Dublin, Ireland and 160 Rue Montmartre in Paris, France and factories at Hemel, Hempsted and Redbourne in Hertfordshire and in Stockport, a town near Manchester.  During the second half of the 19th century the Vyse compnay participated in at least four international fairs[23] and obtained prize metals at London in 1851[24], Paris in 1867[25], Vienna in 1873[26] and Paris again in 1878[27].  At the 1878[28] exhibition they received the only Gold Medal ever award for straw goods.  The 1880[29] advertisement shown above provides additional information about their products and the location of their factories that year.  Also, it was most likely during this period that Vyse, Sons & Co. worked with William Avery of Redditch to place their name on the Quadruple Golden Casket - Fleur di Lis needle case (pictured here), one of Avery’s most popular designs which he registered in 1868.

It is unclear exactly who was in charge during the 1890’s, but it was not Edmund Waller Vyse because he died in 1890.  Also, at some point George Pope Thirkell’s son Arthur and Francis Thirkell’s sons Sidney and Claude began working for the company.  Then either sometime before or after Henry Vyse’s death in 1892 and George Pope Thirkell’s death in 1897 a new partnership was established between the two surviving partners Howard Vyse and Francis Thirkell.  This partnership continued until 1900[30] when it was dissolved, presumably because that year the firm was converted to a limited liability company named Vyse, Sons & Co. Limited.  Howard Vyse and Francis Thirkell becoming the managing directors with Arthur Thirkell, Sidney Thirkell and Claude Thirkell as directors[31].  In the 1901 census Howard was listed as the chairman and Arthur Thirkell was listed as the secretary.  Probably because Francis Thirkell died in 1905 and Howard Vyse in 1909, by 1914[32] Sidney Thirkell and Claude Thirkell were managing the company.  At that time the firm had warehouses at 76 Wood Street in London, which was also their main office, and others in Manchester, Paris and Brussels and they had factories at Luton and St. Albans.  The firm continued to operate during the first half of the 20th century but eventually ceased to exist as it no longer appeared in newspapers after 1960[33].

The Vyse Owners

Thomas Vyse was born c1780 in Birmingham and was baptized at St. Martin, the city’s original parish church[34].  Not much is known about his parents Andrew and Jane Vyse, but they appear to have had some degree of wealth.  How else could their son Thomas move to London, which is 118 miles southeast of Birmingham, marry a local underage girl there when he was only 21 and open a business that was listed in a London city directory a year later in 1802.  Thomas married Alice Crooke in the Islington section of London in 1801 and they had 10 children between 1802 and 1822: Thomas Andrew, Alice who died two weeks after being baptized, George Batten, Richard, William, Frederick who died at age 1, Charles, Frederick, Maria Louise, and Henry.  At first the family lived near Wood Street, slightly northeast of St. Paul’s Cathedral.  Then they moved to Holborn Bridge and later to Holborn Hill[35] near St. Andrew’s church in the Holborn section of London where they remained until at least 1822.  Sometime between 1822 and 1841 they moved about 5 miles south to Herne Hill, Brixton in Lambeth, an area originally created for wealthy families[36].  And Thomas was indeed a wealthy man as the family had four servants in 1851: a footman, a cook and two housemaids. Also, that year Thomas and Alice’s youngest son Henry was still living with them and both Thomas and Henry were working as straw hat manufacturers.  Alice died there in 1855 at age 71 and was buried at the Norwood Cemetery in Lambeth.  Five years later Thomas died there at age 81[37] and was also buried at the Norwood Cemetery.  When his will was probated a month later his estate was valued at almost £180,000 which is approximately equal to £10,643,256[38] today.  The will was proved by the oaths of his son-in-law John Davis Welch and his youngest son Henry Vyse.

The three sons heavily involved with the Vyse business will be discussed individually in later paragraphs.  Five of the other children of Thomas and Alice Vyse, who were all born in Holborn, survived to adulthood but did not work for the Vyse straw hat company or died at rather young ages or limited information about them has been found.  George Batten Vyse was born c1805.  He appears to have married Sarah Ives in the London area in 1830 but what happened to him after that is a mystery.  Another son William Vyse was born in 1812.  When he was 22 years old in 1834 he sailed to New York with his brother Charles and presumably helped establish the Vyse business in the USA.  Unfortunately, he died there at age 31 in 1843 and was buried at the Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.  Charles Vyse was born c1815 and accompanied his brother William to New York when he was 20 years old.  It is unclear how long he remained in the USA and where he lived during most of his life although he was a partner in family business until 1848.  Charles died at age 56 in 1872 of disease of the glands in the groin while living at Camberwell-New-Road in Surrey, a district of South London next to Brixton.  His estate, valued at under £8,000, was proved by his nephew Howard Vyse and George Pope Thirkell.  The son Frederick Vyse was born c1816 and not much is known about him.  It seems most likely that Frederick went to Florence, Italy to assist his father’s business there.  At the time wide-brimmed and flat-topped hats known as leghorns made of straw from Italian wheat, were very popular with women.  The word leghorn was the English name for the Italian port city of Liverno, Italy[39].  Frederick died in Florence, Italy in 1840 at age 24 and was buried at a cemetery there.  His grave contains the following phrase “Sacred to the Memory of Frederick Vyse son of Thomas Vyse of London who departed this life in Florence February the 28 1840”.  The daughter Marie Louise Vyse was born in 1820.  She married John Davis Welch in 1841 in Brixton and they lived in the Camberwell section of Herne Hill, not far from her parents.  Marie Louise and John had 14 children: Alice, Louisa, John, Agnes, Ellen, Florence, Clara, Emily, Howard, Constance, Stanley, Gertrude, Maude and Norman.  Mr. Welch also worked as a straw hat merchant and manufacturer who achieved a high degree of success as noted in the fact that his household had either six or eight servants in each census between 1851 and 1871.  Mr. Welch died in 1880 at age 61 and left an estate of £90,000 (£5,956,623[40] today) to his wife and others.  Maria lived an additional 14 years and died in 1894 at age 74 and was buried at the Norwood Cemetery in Lambeth.

Thomas Andrew Vyse was the eldest son of Thomas and Alice Vyse.  He was born in c1802 and was baptized at St. Alban on Wood Street in London.  When he was 14 years old he was apprenticed to a warehouseman for seven years to learn how to work in and manage a warehouse.  In 1826 Thomas Andrew married Mary Jane Fisher at St. Martin’s on Ludgate Hill in London and they had 8 children between 1827 and 1839: Mary Jane, Florence Ann, Carlotta, Thomas Andrew Jr., Ernest William, Emily Victoria, Faulkner and Howard. Although at first the family lived in the Hornsey district of north London, they spent several years in Florence and Lucca, Italy, not far from Liverno, where one of their children died in 1829 and another was born in 1830.  Presumably Thomas Andrew was in Italy to help his father establish the Vyse business there and to more easily obtain leghorn hats.  By 1831 Thomas, Mary Jane and the children were back in Hornsby where they remained until at least 1839.  Then in 1851 the entire family moved to New York, USA for a few years before returning to the UK sometime before 1861.  After their overseas adventure, they spent the rest of their lives in the UK, first in Hayes, a town in west London, before moving to Brixton in south London.  Thomas Andrew was a partner in the Vyse family straw hat business from at least 1853 until his retirement in 1865.  He died in Brixton in 1865 at age 63 of heart disease[41] and was buried at the Norwood Cemetery in Lambeth.  Thomas Andrew left an estate of £30,000 proved by the oaths of his youngest brother Henry Vyse and his youngest son Howard Vyse who both worked at the Vyse company’s Wood Street warehouse.  His wife Mary Jane died 12 years later in 1877 at age 74.

Richard Vyse was the third son of Thomas and Alice Vyse.   He was born c1807 at Holborn Hill and was baptized that year at St. Andrew in the Holborn section of London.  Richard married Charlotte Waller in 1827 in Luton, Bedfordshire, a town 34 miles northwest of London.  At the time Luton was famous for hat making, in fact the hat making industry began there in the 17th century[42].  Richard and Charlotte had 11 children who were born there between 1829 and 1849: Ellen, Edmund Waller, Sydney, Clara, Harriet, Richard, Emily who died in infancy[43], William, Emily, Charles and Arthur.  Richard worked as a straw hat manufacturer in Luton his entire life and was a partner in the family business from at least 1848 until his death, becoming the senior partner in 1853.  He died[44] in Lambeth at his father’s residence in 1855 at age 49 of an inward ulcer of long standing while visiting his father and was buried at the Norwood Cemetery in Lambeth.  His estate valued at £100,000[45] (£5,912,902[46] today) was proved by his friend Thomas Foster, his brother Henry Vyse and his eldest son Edmund Waller Vyse.  Although his will is rather hard to read because of the old style of handwriting, it provided a trust for his 10 children who were to receive equal shares when they reached a certain age.  His youngest daughter Emily, who was 11 years old at the time of his death, sued Mr. Foster in 1872[47] as she did not believe she was given her fair share.  The lawsuit which became known as “Vyse v Foster” was well documented in several journals at the time and provides excellent details regarding the partners in the Vyse company and who was in charge from 1848 through 1869.  Richard’s wife Charlotte remained in the Luton area for some years and later moved to the Portsmouth area, then to Marylebone in London and finally settled in Barnet a suburb of north London where she died in 1891 at age 84.

Henry Vyse was the youngest son of Thomas and Alice Vyse.  He was born in 1822 and baptized less than a month after his birth at St. Andrew in Holborn.  Henry lived with parents until at least 1851 and was a partner in the Vyse family business from at least 1845 until his death becoming the senior parent in 1864.  Sometime between 1851 and 1855 Henry moved to Westbourne Terrace in the Paddington section of London.  He married Louisa Cornwall there at St. John’s in 1855 and they had no children.  Louise died 22 years later in 1877 at age 57 in the Wandsworth section of London just south of the Thames River.  Less than a year later in 1878, Henry married his second wife, a French woman named Hortense Noiret, in Paris, France.  It is unclear exactly where Henry was living during most of his life after 1877, however he died in Busigny, France, a town in northern France near the border with Belgium, in 1892 at age 70.  His estate was valued at £57,862 and his will listed his address as 76 Howard Street in Cheapside indicating he lived in the London area and perhaps was only visiting France at the time of his death.  His will also mentioned his nephew Howard Vyse and George Pope Thirkell who were his partners in the Vyse straw hat business, as well as his wife Mrs. Hortense Vyse, her sister Madame Noriet and her brother Maurice Noriet.

Only two of the grandsons of Thomas and Alice Vyse were partners in family’s straw hat business: Edmund Waller Vyse and Howard Vyse.  Edmund Waller Vyse, the eldest son of Richard Vyse (c1807-1855) and Charlotte Waller was born in 1832 in Luton.  He remained in Luton and became a partner in the Vyse family business in 1859.  Presumably Edmund handled the Luton side of the family business until sometime between 1871 and 1890 when he moved to Westgate-on-Sea in Kent, a seaside resort 112 miles southeast of Luton.  Evidently, he never married and died in Westgate-on-Sea in 1890 at age 58 of cerebral softening and ecchymosis.  His estate of £25,484 was proved by his business partners George Pope Thirkell and Howard Vyse, also his cousin.  The other grandson, Howard Vyse, was the youngest son of Thomas Andrew Vyse (c1802-1865) and Mary Ann Fisher.  Howard was born in 1839 in the Edmonton section of north London and baptized at St. Mary’s in Hornsey.  In 1862 he married Jane Jessie Anderson at St. James in Lambeth and they had 3 children between 1868-1878: Maud Jessie, Henry Howard and Catherine Howard.  Howard joined the Vyse family business as a partner in 1864 and spent his entire life working there and living mostly in the London area.  He became the managing director and chairman of the firm when it became a limited liability company in 1900.  Howard died in 1909 in Romford, Essex at age 70 and his wife died 13 years later in London in 1922 at age 85.  To date his probate has not been located.

The Reynolds Owners

Unfortunately, not much has been found regarding the John Reynolds associated with the Vyse straw hat business because the surname is quite common in the UK.  The John Reynolds who became a partner in 1853 and retired from the business in 1869 was a nephew of the founder Thomas Vyse, meaning he was the child of one of Thomas’s sisters[48].  He was born c1804 and although it is unknown where he lived for most of his life, he traveled to Italy as some point, most likely to assist the Vyse business in obtaining leghorn straw hats or managing their business there.  John died in Prato, a town 25 kilometers northwest of Florence, in 1887 and was buried in a cemetery in Florence.  His will was probated in the UK in 1888 three months after his death.  In it he was listed a Giovanni otherwise John Reynolds which implies he had lived in Italy for some time to have adopted the Italian name for John.  His estate valued at £11,314 was proved by Charles Vyse Palin, who appears to be one of his cousins.

The Thirkell Owners

George Pope Thirkell, the son of William and Ann Thirkell, was born c1820 in Hawkhurst, Kent, a town about 52 miles southeast of London.  He married Sarah Williams in 1846 in the Camberwell section of south London and they lived in Camberwell until at least 1861.  After George Pope joined the Vyse firm as a partner in 1859 the Thirkell family moved to Clapham in the Wandsworth section of southwest London where they spent the remainder of their lives.  George and Sarah had 10 children between 1847 and 1864: Emily, George Pope Jr., Frederick, Arthur, Amy, Lucy, Percy, Edgar, Clifton, and Elizabeth.  For most of his life George worked as a straw hat manufacturer or merchant and remained in the Vyse business until his death.  George’s wife Sarah died in Clapham in 1888 at age 66 followed by George 9 years later at age 76 in 1897.  George left an estate of £22,322 to his business partner Howard Vyse and his son Arthur Thirkell.  The son Arthur Thirkell, who was born in 1853, joined his father’s business at some point.  Arthur married Fanny Elizabeth Price in 1881 in Clapham and they had 1 child: George Price.  Arthur’s wife died shortly after the child’s birth in 1882 at age 37 and he never remarried.  In 1900 he became a director of Vyse, Sons & Co. Limited and a year later in 1901 was listed as the secretary of a straw hat warehouse.  By 1911 Arthur was retired from the wholesale straw hat business and spent his final days in a hospital in Dorset where he died in 1923 at age 70.  His estate valued at £6,194 was left to his widowed sister Lucy Price,

Francis William Pinnock Thirkell was the younger brother of George Pope Thirkell.  Francis was born c1823 in Benenden, Kent, a village just east of Hawkhurst, to William and Ann Thirkell.  He also moved to the London area and in 1847 married Catherine Jenkins in Islington.  Francis and Catherine had 3 children: Kate, Francis William and Ellen Nancy before Catherine passed away in 1851 at age 29.   Two years later Francis married his second wife Mary Ann Elizabeth Thompson in Camberwell in 1853 and they had 12 children between 1854 and 1873: Sidney, Ernest, Walter, Alice Ada, Howard, Blanche, Horace Vyse, Claude, Lina Marion, Ethel Francis, Beatrice Maud and Leonard.  Over the years Francis and his family lived in the Camberwell, Lewisham, Croydon and Penge sections of London.  His second wife died in Croydon in 1875 at age 42.   Francis worked as a warehouseman and straw hat maker for a number of years becoming a partner in the Vyse business in 1864 and then in 1900 a managing director after the firm became a limited liability company.  In 1901 Francis was living in his daughter Kate’s household on the Isle of Wight and 4 years later in 1905 he died in Battle, Sussex near Hastings at age 82.  He left as estate of £886 to his son Sidney Thirkell who was a company director at the time and several others.

Two of his sons of Francis William Pinnock Thirkell worked in the Vyse business at the time of his death in 1905: Sidney and Claude.  Sidney Thirkell was born in 1854 in Lewisham.  He married Amelia Webb in 1879 in Lewisham and they had 2 children: Elsie Webb and Dora Webb.  At first the family lived in the Bromley section of south London later moving to Chatham, Kent, a town 32 miles southeast of London.  Sometime between 1881 and 1891 they returned to the London area and settle in the town of Beckenham, 10 miles south of London, where they remained until at least 1901.  During most of those years Sidney worked as a warehouseman and at some point joined the straw hat business that later became known as of Vyse, Sons & Co. Limited where he became a director in 1900.  Sidney died in 1926 in Tenderen, Kent, a town 60 miles southeast of London and left as estate valued at £12,319 to his wife Amelia.  The other son of Francis William Pinnock Thirkell was Claude Thirkell who was born in 1867 in Lewisham.  In 1892 Claude married Miriam Harriet Hordern at St. John’s in Westminster.   Claude and Miriam had 3 children between 1893 and 1905: Anthony Hordern Claude who died within a few months of birth, Vera Hordern and Vernon Hordern.  They lived in the Bromley area for a few years, then also moved to Beckenham not far from his brother Sidney.  Claude worked as a warehouseman and by 1900 was also a director at Vyse, Sons and Co. Limited.  He died in 1944 in Battle, Kent at age 77 and his estate was valued at £77,621.  His wife Miriam died 3 months later in Leonard-on-Sea, near Hastings.

Foster.  Additional information about the case is found in three other sources: 1) Reports of Cases Decided by the English Courts, Vol. IV, Albany, N Y. by William Gould & Son, 1877 pages 904-928 (S=books.google.com); 2) The Law Times Reports, Vol. XXVII from September 1872 to February 1873, pages 774-781(S=books.google.com; and 3) From the London Street Views website at https://londonstreetviews .wordpress.com/2015/01/20/thomas-vyse-straw-hat-manufacturer-2/ which indicates this data came from later notices in the London Gazette.

[48] According to a generation chart on ancestry.com, John Reynolds was listed as a nephew in Thomas Vyse’s 1855 will which also mentions Thomas Vyse’s sister Caroline Reynolds, who was John’s mother.  Unfortunately, I was unable to locate an actual copy of the will to verify this, however based on other information it seems accurate.
