J. W. Stutter (aka Joel Whiton Stutter): History

The Company

According to the 1906[1] newspaper advertisement on the next page, this company was established in 1811, however there is no evidence to support that date.  During the Victorian Era companies frequently claimed they A picture containing building, outdoor, street, road

W. Stutter, cutler at 184 Shoreditch High Street (pictured bere on the left[3]) in London’s East End.  Earlier in 1860[4] Mr. Stutter’s father was listed at that same address as Joel Barns Burcombe Stutter, also a cutler.  The father was first listed in city directories as a cutler in 1820[5] and his son Joel Whiton Stutter was apprenticed tA picture containing text, outdoor

W. Stutter.  By 1881 the three eldest sons of Joel Whiton Stutter: George Franklin Stutter, Joel Stutter Jr. and Jesse Stutter also joined their father’s company, George by 1871, Joel Jr. by 1878 and Jesse by 1881.  In 1875[9] the company became known as Joel Whiton Stutter, a name it retained for most of its existence[10], although it was most often listed on store fronts, like the one seen here on the right, and in newspaper advertisements, like the one below, as J. W. Stutter manufacturing cutler.  The business also expanded by 1875[11] and now included a shop at 133 Bishopsgate Street (pictured here on the right[12]) in addition to the original one at 184 Shoreditch High Street.  By 1880[13] another shop was added at 138 Goswell Road.  The middle son Joel Jr. obviously managed the shop on Bishopsgate because he lived there from at a least 1878 until around 1891[14].

Description automatically generatedAfter Joel Whiton Stutter died in 1885[15] his three sons continued the business at all three locations for a number of years.  Perhaps the reason there were three shops at three different places was so each brother could have a shop of his own to manage.  It is unclear why the address at Shoreditch High Street changed from 184 to 173 by 1895[16].  Possibly the local government decided to renumber the buildings on that street, or the business simply moved to another building on the block.  From at least 1905[17] until at least 1910[18] the business opened one more shop at 125 High Street in Stoke Newington which was listed as Joel W. Stutter cutler.  Presumably this was where the youngest brother Jesse and his eldest son Henry Herbert Stutter worked for a few years as it was very close to their residence.  The 1906[19] advertisement seen here provides additional information about the firm’s product line.

In 1910[20] the business became a limited liability company which was presumably managed by the two eldest brothers George and Joel Jr. as they were listed as directors in the 1911 census.   When Jesse the youngest brother died in 1913[21] his son Henry Herbert appears to have taken over his interest in the family business as he spent his life working in the cutlery trade.  However, when George, the eldest brother, died in 1915[22] without a son, his interest in the business ended.  The middle brother, Joel Jr., was the only brother alive after 1915 and his sons’ pursued careers in other areas.  Apparently, Joel Jr. remained the governing director of the Stutter cutlery business until at least 1939[23] with his nephew Henry Herbert assisting him.

The last time the business appeared in city directories was in 1930[24] when it was listed as J. W. Stutter, Ltd cutlery manufacturers, however with only two locations, 173 Shoreditch High Street and 268 Bishopsgate Street.  The company must have gone through some difficult times because in 1945[25] Joel Stutter Jr., who was the chairman then, and Henry Herbert Stutter, the company secretary, filed a petition to have the shares in the company’s capital reduced.  What happened after that is unclear although it must have ceased to exist because it was no longer listed in city directories or newspapers.  According to an article in a magazine in 2013 that included an interview with Bryan Stutter, a descendant of this Stutter family, the original J. W. Stutter was a company of “manufacturing cutlers employing a sheet metal worker, a carpenter, an ivory carver and a silversmith, but by the sixties could no longer compete with imported cutlery and the business was sold, moving to Hackney, only to close finally in 1982.”[26]

Description automatically generatedTo date only one Avery style needle case has been found with the Stutter name, the Quadruple Golden Casket - Butterfly on Leaf (seen here) which was patented by William Avery and Albert Fenton of Redditch in 1868.  It is stamped with the “J. W. Stutter 133 Bishopsgate St City” name meaning an arrangement was most likely made between Joel Jr. who lived and worked at that address and Mr. Avery which allowed the Stutter name to be placed on the exterior of Avery’s design.

The Stutter Owners

Joel Whiton Stutter, the founder of this company, came from a family of cutlers in the London area.  His father was Joel Barns Burcombe Stutter, who will be listed as Joel I for the remainder of this narrative.  Joel I was born c1786, the son of Richard Burcombe Stutter a tinman and Priscilla Elizabeth Barns who lived in Hoxton, Shoreditch an area located in the East End of London, a mile and a half north of St. Paul’s Cathedral.  He was baptized that year at St Botolph, Aldgate, a church 1 mile east of St. Paul’s. At age 15 in 1801 Joel I was apprenticed to another man to learn the cutlery and silversmith trade, an occupation he retained throughout his life.  In 1812 he married his first wife Elizabeth Stutter at St. Helen in Bishopsgate, almost a mile northeast of St. Paul’s.  Unfortunately, Elizabeth died 10 years later in 1822 and was buried at St. Leonard’s in Shoreditch.  Three years later in 1825 Joel I married his second wife, Ann May Whiton, at St. James Duke’s Place, less than a mile east of St. Paul’s, although this church no longer exists as it was demolished in 1874[27].  Ann May was 19 years younger than him.  Joel I and Ann May had 7 children between 1825 and 1840 all baptized at St. Leonard’s: Hannah Whiton (1825), Joel Whiton (1827), Louisa Daniels (1830), Elizabeth Whiton (1832), John Richard (1835), Sophia (1838) and George Charles (1840) who died at age 6.  The family lived at 184 High Street, Shoreditch, located in the East London boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Hackney.  Ann May died there in 1853 at age 48.  Two years later in 1855 Joel I married his third wife, Mary Hammond a widow, at St James Duke’s Place, who was around 15 years younger than him.  They continued to live in Shoreditch until Joel I died there in 1864 at age 78.  He left an estate valued at under £450 which was proved by his son, also a cutler, Joel Whiton Stutter.  At some point after his death, Mary moved to Deptford in the Greenwich section of southeast London where she died three years later in 1867 at age 69.  She was buried at the Tower Hamlets Cemetery.

Joel Whiton Stutter, who will be listed as Joel II so he is not confused with others in the family with this forename, was born in 1827 in Shoreditch, the eldest son of Joel I and his second wife Ann May Whiton.  When Joel II was 15 years old in 1842 he was apprenticed to his father for 7 years to learn the cutlery trade.  At age 20 in 1847 he married Elizabeth Morgan at St. Mary’s in Islington, 2 miles north of St. Paul’s.  Shortly after their marriage, Joel II and Elizabeth moved temporarily to the USA, to the town of Meriden in New Haven County, Connecticut.  At the time Meriden was known as the “Silver City” [28] because of the large number of silver manufacturers and other producers of cutlery with businesses in this town.  Most likely they decided to visit Meriden to learn more about the American silver cutlery trade.  Later in 1858 Joel II’s younger brother John Richard Stutter, who was born in 1835, immigrated to the USA, settled in Meriden where he worked in a cutlery factory and where he spent the rest of his life.  Unfortunately, Joel II’s wife Elizabeth died in Meriden in 1850 at age 30 and was buried there at the West Cemetery.  Joel II remained in the area for several more years as he married his second wife an American woman named Matilda D. Johnson in Meriden in 1851.  Sometime after the birth of their first child Louisa Ann in 1852, the Stutter family returned to Shoreditch area of East London where they had 6 additional children born between 1854 and 1868: George Franklin (1854), Joel (1856 who will be listed as Joel III), Jesse (1859), Henry Douglas (1863), Matilda Louisa (1865), and Horace Greely (1868).  At first they lived with Joel II’s parents at 184 High Street in Shoreditch where Joel II most likely worked in his father’s cutler business.  He either took over his father’s business after his parents died in the mid 1860’s and renamed it J. W. Stutter or he established his own cutlery business there with that name after their deaths.  Joel II worked as a cutler his entire life with his business and home located at the same address, 184 Shoreditch High Street, which probably meant the shop was on the ground floor and the family lived on the upper floors, a common living arrangement during the Victorian period.  He died there in 1885 at age 58 leaving an estate valued at £3,980 and Matilda died there three years later in 1888 at age 59.  Three of the 7 children of Joel II and Matilda died in their youth:  Louisa Ann at age 2 in 1854, Matilda Louisa at age 9 in 1875 and Horace died in 1871 at age 2.  Of the 4 surviving sons, the three eldest carried on the J. W. Stutter cutlery business whereas the youngest son, Henry Douglas Shutter, became a carpenter and joiner who worked in a fitter shop.

A tombstone in a cemeteryGeorge Franklin Stutter was the eldest son of Joel II and Matilda Stutter.  George was born in Shoreditch in 1854 and married Mary Ann Clarke in 1877 at St. John, Hoxton in Hackney.  They had one child, Matilda Ann who was born in 1878.  Mary died 8 years later in 1886 at age 30 and was buried at the City of London Cemetery in Newham, northeast London.  George spent his entire life working as a cutler in the business his father founded and was listed as a cutler employer in 1901 and a cutler employer director in 1911 indicating he was managing the company which had other employees.  At first this Stutter family lived at Hoxton New Town in Shoreditch, however after his wife’s death, George moved 3 miles north to Upper Clapton in the Stamford Hill section of North Hackney where he remained with his daughter Matilda.  George died there in 1915 at age 61 and left an estate of £6,800 to his daughter.  George was also buried at the City of London Cemetery in Newham[29].

Joel Stutter[30] (Joel III), the second son of Joel II and Matilda Stutter, was born in 1856 in Shoreditch. At age 21 he married Alice Mary Ann Ismay in 1878 at the Finsbury Chapel in the Finsbury Circus section of London.  This Stutter family lived at 133 Bishopsgate, 1 mile northeast of St. Paul’s, the same address as one of the J. W. Stutter cutlery shops.  Like his father before him, his shop was most likely on the ground floor with the family residence on the upper floors.  Joel III and Alice Mary A. had 11 children born between 1879 and 1898: Elvina Alice (1879), Rhoda Matilda (1880), Joel Whiton (1883 who will be listed as Joel IV), Edith (1884), Alice May (1886), Winifred Douglas (1888), Arthur (1890), Lawrence George (1892), Hilda Emma (1893), Gerald Stanley (1894) and John Eric (1898).  Sometime between 1891 and 1892 they moved to Stamford Hill not far from Joel III’s brother George where they lived for a number of years.  Sometime after 1911, they moved again this time to Church Crescent in Finchley, 6 miles north of St. Paul’s where they spent the remainder of their lives.  Like his father Joel III also spent his entire life working as a cutler and by 1891 was listed as a cutler employer and in 191l as a director of a cutler and dealer in silver plate employer, most likely working in the same business as his brother George.  Alice May died in Finchley in 1934 at age 79 and was buried at the St. Marylebone cemetery in London.  She left an estate valued at £237 to her husband who was listed that year as a manufacturing cutler.  Joel III continued to live at Church Crescent in Finchley with his daughters Elvina and Hilda and was listed in 1939 as a governing director.  He died there in 1950 at age 93 leaving an estate of £4,447 to his daughters Elvina and Hilda.  Of the five sons of Joel III and Alice Mary only one was known to have been involved with the family’s cutlery business and that was only for a few years.  Joel Whiton Stutter (Joel IV) was born in 1883.  Although he was listed as the manager of a cutlery and silver plate worker in 1911 he became a spectacle maker and later an optician.  Not much is known about the son Arthur who was born in 1890.  The son Lawrence George who was born in 1892, immigrated to Australia and joined the Australian Military Service during World War I.  The fourth son Gerald Stanley was born in 1894 and also traveled to Australia in 1914 at age 20.  The youngest son John Eric was born in1898 and became a representative of a fine instrument maker.

Jesse Stutter, the third son of Joel II and Matilda Shutter, was born in Shoreditch in 1859.  He married Emily Yates at Ecclesall Bierlow in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1881, 159 miles north of London.  How they met is unknown, but his wife was born in Sheffield.  After their marriage they returned to the London area and lived in Stamford Hill in Hackney, later moving a mile south west to Stoke Newington.  Jesse and Emily had 7 children born between 1882 and 1901: Emily (1882), Henry Herbert (1884), Jesse (1886), Marian Douglas (1888), Thomas Franklin (1891), Elsie (1895) and Eva Dorothy (1901).  Jesse was consistently listed as a cutler employer, most likely working with his brothers in the cutlery business his father’s established.  He died in 1913, was buried at the Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington and left an estate valued at £5,342.  Sometime after his death, his wife Emily moved to Enfield in Winchmore Hill, 6 miles north where she died 23 years later in 1936 at age 76 leaving an estate of £1,826.  Of their three sons only one is known to have pursued a career as a cutler manufacturer.  Henry Herbert was born in 1884 in Bishopsgate in London’s East End.  By the time he was 16, in 1901 he was working as a cutler.  In 1910 he married Lily A. Taylor in Edmonton, a town approximately 5 miles north of Stoke Newington, and they had one child: Herbert Thomas (1911).  At some point they moved about 3 miles west to the town of Southgate where they were living in 1939 and where Henry was listed as a cutlery manufacturer and dealer and his son Herbert was a bank clerk.  Lily died there in 1952 at age 66.  After her death Henry moved to Westcliff-on-Sea, 40 miles east of London where he died at age 87 in 1972 leaving an estate valued at £6,105.
