Sydney J. Saunders & Co.: History

The Company

This firm appears to have been established by Sydney John Saunders sometime during the first half of 1876[1] based on a notice placed in a book that year and the fact that the company was not listed in the 1875[2] London directory.  The book’s notice says “Mr. Sydney J. Saunders, recently with Messrs. Letts and Co., has commenced business at No. 54 St. Mary Axe, as a wholesale and export stationer”[3].  At some point Archibald Keith joined the firm and became Saunders partner. As an export stationer[4] the company sold books, paper and writing implements and by 1881[5] actually manufactured many of the items they sold.  Also, that year, the firm employed five men, eight women and two boys[6] and in 1891[7] a large part of their business was exported to places like East India, the Cape and Australia.  Sometime between 1880[8]  and 1885[9] the business moved to 45 St. Mary Axe and remained there until 1903[10].  Their product line can be best seen in the four pages of advertisements below which were placed in a book they published in 1888[11]. This included manufacturing different types of paper, ink, carbon phoA picture containing text, receipt

Description automatically generatedIn early 1901[12] the partnership between Saunders and Keith was dissolved by mutual consent and the business was carried on solely by Sydney J. Saunders.  Roughly two years later in 1903[13] the firm moved from their St. Mary Axe address to 7 Bevis Marks which was only a couple blocks east.  It remained there until May 1904[14] when the business was sold based on the Tenders notice seen here which was placed in a local newspaper. “A tender is an invitation to bid for a project or accept a formal offer such as a takeover bid.”[15]

1905[16] was the last time this business was listed in local trade directories. It was recorded that year as “Saunders Sydney J. & Co. wholesale export stationers, see Sandle Bros”.  Sometime between 1904 and 1905 the Saunders firm was sold to Sandle Bros. who were listed in the 1905[17] directory as follows “Sandle Brothers (in which is incorporated Sydney J. Saunders & Co.), wholesale, export, manufacturing & fancy stationers, account book manufacturers, printers, christmas & birthday card publishers & fancy goods importers…”

The Sydney J. Saunders & Co. name has been found on three Avery style needle cases: Shakespeare’s Birthplace - Small version (pictured on the left) registered by W. Avery & Son of Redditch in 1873; the Easel-Floral which was registered by Buncher & Haseler of Birmingham in 1875; and the Troll and Box (pictured on the right) registered in 1877 by Frank J. Kendrick also of Birmingham.  It seems most likely that someday additional examples of Avery style needle cases will be found with the Saunders name.  And why is that?  Because this company’s merchandise appealed to the middle and upper classes who could afford fancy brass needle cases.

The area in London where this firm was originally located is less than a mile north west, of the Tower of London.  Much of this area of London was destroyed in 1940/1941 during the Blitz of World War II.  Today one of London’s most famous modern buildings can be found at 30 St. Mary Axe.  This 41-story building, which was built in 2003, is known as the “The Gherkin” because of its shape and it is one of London’s most recognized landmarks[18].

The Saunders Owners

The parents of Sydney John Saunders were James Ebenezer Saunders Jr. and Harriet Farley.  Sydney’s grandfather, James Ebenezer Saunders Sr., who was born in London in 1778, became a very successful fishmonger (a shop or person who sells fish for food[19]).  James Sr. attained the status of esquire and left an estate valued at £16,000 (approximately £946,067[20] today) when he passed away in 1860 at age 81.  James Jr. was born in 1802 and was apprenticed to his father James Sr. for seven years beginning when he was age 14 in 1816.   This is where he learned the fishing business, an occupation he also held throughout his life.  In 1825 James Jr. married Harriet Farley in Clapham, Surrey, part of the south London Borough of Lambeth.  The Saunders family lived on Thames Street on the north side of the Thames River between the Tower of London and St. Paul’s Cathedral for a number of years before moving to Kennington in Lambeth where James Jr. worked as a wholesale fish factor in 1851.  James Jr. and Harriet had 4 children between 1827 and 1847: Elizabeth F., James Ebenezer III, Sydney John and Alexander Goudge.  Unfortunately, James Jr. died in 1857 at the age of 55 by poisoning himself during a temporary state of insanity while the family was living in Finsbury Circus, a mile or so northwest of the Tower of London.  He was buried at Norwood Cemetery in Lambeth.  His wife Harriet lived an additional nineteen years and passed away in 1876 at age 69 while visiting Brighton.

The older brother of Sydney John Sanders achieved a high level of success, whereas their younger brother Alexander died at age 16 in 1864 of rheumatic fever.  James Ebenezer Sanders III was born in 1830 on Lower Thames Street, along the river just east of the London Bridge, and became an architect by the time he was 21 in 1851.  Four years later in 1855 he married Jane Barnard and by 1859 they were living in Lewisham, a Borough of south east London where they remained until at least 1871.  James IIA picture containing sky, building, outdoor, street

Obituary

Mr. J. Ebenezer Saunders, D. L., J. P., of Lee

We record with deep regret, the death, which occurred on Wednesday night last week, after a long illness of Mr. James Ebenezer Saunders, D.L., J.P., F.S.A., F.L.S., F.G.S., of Chelvistone, Eltham-road, Lee.  Mr. Saunders, who was in his 80th year, had for a long period taken a very active interest in religious and public affairs, both in the City of London and in this locality.  By profession an architect, he was the founder of the firm Messrs. J. E., M. L., and H. S. Saunders, of Coleman-Street, E.C., his partners being his sons.  For upwards of 30 years he was a member of the Corporation of the City of London, serving first as Common Councilman, and afterwards as a member of the Court of Aldermen, being unanimously elected in 1887 to succeed Sir William McArthur as the representative of the Ward of Coleman-street.  He resigned in the following year.  He was also for a considerable period a prominent member of the now defunct Metropolitan Board of Works.  During his membership of the Court of Common Council he filled the chairs of the City Lands, Bridge House, and Coal and Corn and Finance Committees.  Of late years he had taken no active part in the municipal life of the city except occasionally attending the Coleman-street wardmotes.  Upon the retirement of Mr. William Ewart Gladstone from the representation of Greenwich in Parliament Mr. Saunders, who was a pronounced and stalwart Radical, made an unsuccessful attempt to enter the House of Commons as one of the members for that borough.  Twice subsequently he contested the Dartford Division of Kent, but on both occasions failed.  In 1876 he was elected a member of the London School Board, having as he colleagues Mr. Henry Gover, Canon Money, and Mr. Guildford Barker Richardson – all of whom predeceased him – and represented the Greenwich Division until 1885.  In 1876 he was appointed a Deputy-Lieutenant of the City of London, and at the time of his death he was one of the oldest members of the Court of Lieutenancy, as he was of the Blackheath Bench of Magistrates.  He occupied a prominent place in Masonic circles, held rank for some years in the Auxiliary Forces, and was also a member of the Royal Astronomical, Geological, Linnean and Zoological Societies.  In religion Mr. Saunders was a member of the Baptist denomination, and worshipped at Lee Chapel.  He was an active worker in the interest of the Sunday School Union – on the council of which he served for fifty years – and was formerly president of the South-East Auxiliary, being elected a vice-president on his retirement.  The cause of charity ever found in him a hearty supporter; his death will be the occasion of deep grief to many - The funeral took place on Monday at Eltham Parish Churchyard . . .  The mourners were Mr. and Mrs. Martin L. Saunders (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. Herbert S. Saunders (son), Miss Saunders (daughter), Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Williams (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. and Mrs. Sydney J. Saunders (brother and sister-in-law) . . .”[22]

Sydney John Saunders was born in 1837 at Upper Thames Street in London, along the river just west of London Bridge.  He lived with his parents until his father’s death in 1857 when he most likely moved in with his older brother James III.  Sydney married Caroline Ashby in 1859 in Lewisham and by 1861 they were living with his brother and Sydney was working as a wholesale stationman.  By 1881 he moved to Charlton in the London Borough of Greenwich where Sydney was listed as a manufacturing stationman with 15 employees who were working for the Sydney J. Saunders & Co business.  In 1891 the family either lived in or was visiting Reigate, a town 19 miles south of London.  In 1891 and 1901 he was consistently listed as a export merchant or wholesale export stationer and in 1891 was recorded as exporting goods mostly to E. India, Cape and Australia, major parts of the British Empire.  Sydney and Caroline had no children during their 38 years together.  Carolyn died in 1897 at age 58 after suffering with cancer for one and a half years and within three months Sydney married his second wife Flora Teresa Morris, who was 26 years younger than him, at St. George in Hanover Square in the London Borough of Westminster.  Within a year their first child was born followed by a second a year later and a third a year after that: Sydney James Reginald, Charles James Russell and Agnes Flora.  At first the family lived in the south London Borough of Croydon in a home they called Chateau Teresa, before moving to Denbigh Street in Westminster.  In 1911 when Sydney was 74 years of age he worked as a manager in an export stationary business, possible the one that took over his personal business around 1904.  Sydney died in Bromley, another borough in south London in 1923 at age 85.  Thirteen years after his death his wife Flora and their daughter Agnes moved to Toronto, Canada in 1936 and Flora died there in 1948.

Sydney John and Flora Saunders had two sons.  The eldest, Sydney James Reginald Saunders (Sydney Jr. for the rest of this narrative) was born in 1898 in Croydon.  Shortly after his father’s death in 1923 Sydney Jr. moved to Canada and began to travel extensively between Canada, the UK and the USA, working as an export manager.  In 1928 he married Ila Maude Campbell who was born in Manitoba, Canada.   He later became a publisher and they settled in Toronto where his mother and sister Agnes joined him in 1936.  Sydney Jr. died there in 1945 at age 47 of coronary occlusion and was buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.  His wife Ila lived an additional forty-one years and died in 1986 and was buried next to him.  The youngest Saunders son was Charles John Russell Saunders who was born in 1899 in Croydon.  He remained in the London area and married Frederica Elsa Olga Triebner in 1924 in the southwest London Borough of Wandsworth, a year after his father’s death.  In 1939 they were living in Chailey, Sussex, a town about fifty-six miles south of London, were Charles worked as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Pay Corp, which was part of the British Army responsible for administering financial matters[23].  His wife died in 1981 in Brighton at age 87 and he died four years later in Hove, a seaside reside near Brighton, at age 86 in 1985.

The Keith Owners

Unfortunately, no information about Archibald Keith has been found.  There were several men in the London area with this name, but none were listed in the 1881, 1891 or 1901 censuses with the occupation of export stationer or something similar[24].  Because of this there is no way at present to prove which one of these men was the one associated with the Sydney J. Saunders & Co. firm.  Perhaps in the future additional information will be located.
