Here is information about using the internet to locate burial sites of Americans who died in WWII. There have been some new developments since last spring.
ALL American military persons who were buried in cemeteries maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission may be located by accessing www.abmc.gov and selecting the war, and then typing in the name of the deceased. The abmc site also provides information on the cemeteries, scheduled services and ordering flowers and receiving photos. If the entire name is not known, the deceased may be located through the unit (ie 134th infantry) which will tell name, serial number, date of death and cemetery where he is buried. The unit site is NEW.
The internet registry for ALL who have been registered for the American WWII Memorial in Washington DC is up and running. It contains the information provided by registrants for anyone who contributed to the war effort at home or in the services. ALSO, all the KIA, MIA and DOWs (died of wounds) are registered. These names are taken from records in the National Archives or supplied by the American Monuments Commission and include the service numbers, which is essential in tracking down more records.
Here is the site: www.wwiimemorial.com
It is not too late to register yourself or a family member for their participation in WWII. The memorial will be dedicated in Washington DC on May 29, 2004.
