John Coulthart (1779-1852) of Cummertrees, Scotland and North Lunenburg, Ontario

John Coulthart was born on May 12, 1779 in Cummertrees, Annandale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He was the son of John Coulthart (1747-1803) and Margaret Ray (1752-1829).
Click on the thumbnail to see a panoramic view of the village of Cummertrees. Around 1799 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Pasley. John and Elizabeth had two children: William (1800-1880) and John (1804-??). Apparently Elizabeth died shortly after the birth of their second child. She was buried in the Cummertrees Parish kirkyard next to John's parents and grandparents.

Around 1809 John married his second wife, Mary Carruthers. John and Mary had nine children: Elizabeth (1810-??), Jane (1812-1892), Mary (1813-1829), Margaret (1814-aft 1891), James (1816-1888), Christina (1818-1876), Walter (1820-1892), Andrew (1822-aft 1871), and David (1823-aft 1881). John was a tenant farmer at Riddingdyke, a farm on the coast of the Solway Firth owned by the Marquis of Queensberry.

Sometime between October 1823 and January 1827, John, Mary and the eleven children immigrated to North Lunenburg, Stormont County, Ontario not far from the St. Lawrence River.

Three more children were born in Ontario: Henrietta (1827-1913), Thomas (1828-1899) and Jonah (1831-1890). Mary died in 1835 and John died November 10, 1852. Both were buried at the Willis Cemetery in North Lunenburg.

Several of John's children remained in the area and others moved to the U.S.A.:
- William Coulthart (1800-1880) married Jean French and moved north to Cannamore in Finch Township. His children lived in Cannamore, Gouverneur/Watertown, New York and Waseca, Minnesota. Descendants currently live in Eastern Ontario, NJ, NY, MN, FL, LA, CA, IL, TN, AZ, VA and TX.
- John Coulthart (1804-???) unknown
- Elizabeth Coulthart (1810-??) married Holland R. Parsons
in Hawkesbury, Ontario in 1831 and apparently lived near there.
- Jane Coulthart (1812-1892) married William Hunter
and moved to Northfield, Minnesota. Descendants currently live in MN, AZ and VA.
- Mary Coulthart (1813-1829) died in North Lunenburg, Ontario at age 16.
- Margaret Coulthart (1814-aft 1891) married Abraham Gardner and remained in the Lunenburg area.
- James Coulthart (1816-1888) married Christina Steven
and moved north to Morewood in Winchester Township. Descendents currently live in Eastern and Western Ontario and British Columbia, Canada.
- Christina Coulthart (1818-1876) married Frances Harkness and moved to Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Descendants currently live in MN.
- Walter Coulthart (1820-1892) married Nancy Duprat and moved to Waseca, Minnesota later moving to Grafton, Walsh County, North Dakota. Descendants currently live in ND, MN, WI and Manitoba.
- Andrew Coulthart (1822-aft 1871) married Martha Starritt and moved west to Heckston, Ontario in South Grenville County.
- David Coulthart (1823-aft 1881) married Mary ?? and moved to Kingston, Ontario.
- Henrietta Coulthart (1827-1913) married Ira Moke and remained in the Lunenburg area.
- Thomas Coulthart (1828-1899) married Thresa Mott and moved north to Morewood in Winchester Township. Descendants currently live in Eastern and Western Ontario.
- Jonah Coulthart (1831-1890) married Catherine Gillespie and remained in the Lunenburg area. Descendants currently live in Eastern and Western Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.
