Sgt. Dan J. Vlad served as a Light Machine Gunner with the 134th Infantry Regiment. He was reported missing in action on September 11, 1944, when he was captured and held as a prisoner of war (POW).

He entered service on September 10, 1942 at Ft. Hayes, Ohio and was separated from service on October 28, 1945 at Camp Gordon, Georgia. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, American Theater Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Purple Heart Medal.
