"The .30 caliber Browning heavy machine gun was the "Old Reliable" of Infantry weapons. It was too heavy, and that is a serious objection to any infantry weapon, but its stable mount made it accurate, it was water-cooled and so it was for long-range fire in supporting attacks. But is was a master of defense, and it proved itself in the Ardennes. Except for the guns of Co. M, it is likely that the Germans would have surrounded Bastogne again. On the other hand, the German air-cooled machine gun was much lighter, fired twice as fast, and had smokeless powder." James A. Huston - Battery of a Battalion, The Life and Times of an Infantry Battalion in Europe in World War II
