Trying to learn about my father's time in theatre. Know he earned purple heart. Looking for info as to what happened - date, place, etc. Mentioned a fort near Elbe river. Died 12/31/99. Suffered massive stroke 7/3/93. Left him unable to speak/write.

Bob Hill recently sent me this site......

We live in what was one of the best countries in the world because of those brave individuals, such as Sergeant Judson Chaffin, who sacrificed so much for the then current generation and for those of us who follow...A debt we shall never be able to repay....Our U.S. military freed the European continent, that otherwise would have been destroyed and enslaved.

I salute Sergeant Chaffin for his sacrifice. May he rest in peace knowing he contributed to leaving the world a much better place than when he arrived.

My father was a telephone operator or forward observer assigned to CN (command network) Cannon Company, 137 Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, from the initial landing July 5, 1944 at Normandy. 2-3 days later they went into full battle at St. Lo, France. He served until the end of the war. I would be extremely grateful hearing from someone who served with my father. He was from Edison, Tennessee.

Interesting read. My nephew found the site doing research on his grandfather (my dad). My father's name was George A. Hankins, Company M. He lived his entire life in rural Missouri, near Springfield. Retired as a rural U.S. mail carrier and passed away at the age of 67 in 1985. I am one of three sons he and my mother had. She passed away in 1993.

My Grandfather, Calvin Mordecai was in the 134th at Flavigny Bridge in France. He was shot in the eye, jumped off the bridge, and made his way to the culvert where the injured were. He was saved by someone who told him to grab onto his belt while the man also carried another wounded soldier on his shoulders. This soldier saved my grandpaw and the other man. My grandpaw and the other wounded soldier were the last two alive in the culvert. My grandpaw was going to be left behind until he begged the soldier to save him because he was just married and had a young wife at home. I am looking for the man who saved my grandpaw's life.
Thank you,
Wendy Mordecai
