Hello,
My father was John F Ahrens of the 137 Infantry Division. I have some more history of his if this is of any help. Thanks for putting this info together.

My Grandfather (Harry Smith) told me about being in General Patton's 3rd Army, 35th Infantry Division and only told me these things once he found out I was joining the Marine Corps in 1998. He is still alive in a nursing home in Olney, Illinois but in very poor health. I know he drove a truck at some point removing casualties from the Battle of the Bulge. He specifically mentioned that him and 6 others were the only originals (non-replacements) in his company to survive and return from the war. All others were replacements and when they got back they threw a week long party for the 7 of them. Any time he spoke, he always reverted to the "good" memories. he mentioned a "colored tank outfit" that thought there were indestructible for the first couple of days of action and the progress they made was record-breaking. As soon as they lost several tanks and crew, that attitude promptly changed and progress slowed to normal. he also mentioned Sarasota, Florida as a training ground where several men died while on a 29 mile march in the middle of summer. it brought him to tears to describe the facts that the Lt. got lost, refused to admit it and furthermore, disallowed the men to get in the 5-tons. If I remember correctly, 7 men actually died from the march and the heat. He always wondered "what they told those poor boy's folks about how they died". Again, reverting back to the "good" memories, he promptly revisited some cadence they would sing: "Poly-voo, poly-voo... Florida is a hell of a State, the asshole of the 48, poly-voo, poly-voo...

I'm grandson of T/Sgt Billy E Altizer of the 78th ID...ie: 692nd & 751st Field Artillery. Am looking for somesort of insignia for either of these Artillery Units. I have his bayo from Battle of Bulge and Berlin Bombing Campaign. His awards & decorations were stolen sometime ago, and St Louis is reissuing them. Any info on these F.I. Battalions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx in advance.....Shawn

I was interested in knowing when Rudolph H. Gliesing joined the 35th Inf. Div.
He was a good friend of my family and was a better 'Uncle' to me then any of my real uncles, especially after my Dad joined the Seabees in 1942. I know he was with the 137th Inf Reg, HQ 1st Bn.
I know he was sent out to bring in prisoners since he spoke German, being born there.
He also asked to stay during occupation to see if he could found what happened to his family.
