My uncle Paul E. Ares served as a private in the 137th Infantry Division E Company. He never spoke of his service except for an experience he had with almost being killed when a German soldier shot the shovel out of his hands while he was attempting to dig in and take cover while under fire.

I have doing some reseach recently and have seemed to locate some details of several engagements he may have been involved in. His was one of many companies of the 134th, 137th and 320 Infantry Divisions not to mention the many armored divisions which help to defeat the German Armies during the long slug fest known as the Battle of The Bulge.

I don't know how these men endured such a hard, cold and cruel fight and test of endurance. I think I can now understand why he didn't want to talk about it.

Glad that historical details have been kept and are available online.

Thank you for creating this site. I am in the process of sharing my father's WWII letters home on Face Book. He had a few after action report copies in his possession. I felt the experience of reading the letters home and the after action reports for the same time-frame greatly enhanced the experience.

Thanks for pulling this together! I was researching a great uncle that was killed in Normady with the 137th on the 18th of July 1944, and this help alot to map where the regiment was in action. I'm not yet sure which battalion he was with, but this history was an amazing insight. Thank you for posting.

I am trying to find out information on my grandfather Howard Nall from Pamona, NC. He served during WWII. He passed away last November and spoke little of his experience. His dis-charge papers showed area of service as Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes, Saint-Lo, France. It also shows the Bronze Star(5), not sure what the (5) represents.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, first of all, great website! I had thought my Father, who is deceased, was part of the 137th Infantry Company B. His name was William Robert Grosse. I don't see him listed anywhere. Would you have any idea how I could find out military info about him?

Thanks, Kathleen Gerretsen

My father PFC Mendel Genauer, 137th infantry division, 3rd Battalion Company K, lived a very full life after his service, Although he didn't often speak to us about his experiences, he always spoke highly of the men he served with, sometimes sending home to my mother pictures of his company brothers. He passed away ten years ago, and I very much appreciate the work of those who researched and wrote this history, as it provides me a tremendous sense of closeness to him as I read about the mostly very difficult but inspiring effort of he and his comrades.
