Vernon August Vagts, son of William H and Hinrika Johanna (Habbinga) Vagts, was born October 27, 1922 in George, Iowa. He registered for the draft January 23, 1944. At that time he was attending the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. He entered service after graduation and married Pauline "Polly" Amelia Steele October 23, 1943. He was an Infantry Unit Commander in Company H, 320th Infantry Regiment and was promoted from 2nd to 1st Lieutenant September 9, 1944. 1st Lieutenant Vernon A Vagts was killed in action November 19, 1944 in the vicinity of Bermering, France. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, George, Iowa.
