Jack Dempsey Tanner, son of Herman John and Marian Josephine (Townsend) Tanner, was born August 29, 1918 in Hillsboro, Texas. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was living in Dallas, Texas and working at Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Inc. He was inducted into the Army November 18, 1942 at Dallas, Texas and joined Company A, 320th Infantry Regiment January 24, 1945 serving as a Rifleman. He was killed in action February 23, 1945 during an attack to cross the Roer River northeast of Geilenkirchen, Germany. Pvt Jack D Tanner is buried at Restland Memorial Park, Dallas, Texas.

Bronze Star Medal (posthumous)

Private Jack D Tanner, 38286358, Infantry, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States near * * * , Germany on 23 February 1945. When his unit's attack was temporarily halted by enemy machine gun fire from an entrenched position on the right, Private Tanner, a rifleman, moved toward the emplacement drawing the enemy fire while other members of his squad flanked the position from the left. While so engaged, Private Tanner was killed by enemy fire. By his heroic self-sacrifice, he enabled his squad to neutralize the enemy position which was holding up the advance in this sector. Entered military service from Texas.
