Melvin Kenneth Sorensen, son of Gustav Adolf and Myrtle (McNair) Sorensen, was born December 2, 1916 in Mason City, Nebraska. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940 and was inducted into the Army February 14, 1941. A Squad Leader in Company M, 320th Infantry Regiment, he was wounded in action July 30, 1944 southeast of St Lo, France but remained on duty. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge July 31, 1944. S/Sgt Melvin K Sorensen was killed in action October 1, 1944 by artillery shell fragments in the vicinity of the Foret de Gremecey, west of Chateau Salins, France. He is buried at Ansley Cemetery, Ansley, Nebraska.
