James Sherman McNeil, son of Benjamin Andrew and Effie Bell (Bishop) McNeil, was born April 11, 1923 in Gainesville, Missouri. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 while he was living in Holdenville, Oklahoma and working on his father's farm. He was inducted into the Army April 21, 1944 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. At the time of his induction he was living in California. He joined Company G, 320th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 38th Replacement Battalion November 13, 1944 when the unit was in the vicinity of Vaxy, France. He was promoted to Private First Class and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge December 1, 1944. Pfc James S McNeil was killed in action April 16, 1945 in the vicinity of the west bank of the Elbe River north of Magdeburg, Germany. He is buried at Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
