Harold Wayne Lair, son of Clarence Monroe and Ona Stella (Jennings) Lair, was born June 1, 1922 in Girard, Illinois. He registered for the draft June 26, 1942 while living in Joliet, Illinois. He was a Squad Leader in Company G, 320th Infantry Regiment and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 6, 1944. He was wounded July 22, 1944 in the vicinity of St Lo, France and returned to duty. S/Sgt Harold W Lair was killed in action by blast fragments July 28, 1944 in the vicinity of Torigni Sur Vire, France. He was posthumously awarded the Expert Infantryman Badge July 31, 1944 and Combat Infantryman Badge August 20, 1944. He is buried at Girard Township Cemetery, Girard, Illinois.
