320th Infantry Regiment - Company G

Melvin H Lachelt completed basic training at Ft Wolters TX, then joined the 35th Infantry Division at Camp San Luis Obispo CA. He moved with the Division to Camp Ruckers AL before sailing for England where he was stationed near Exeter. He landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy in July 1944 and fought in the battles at St Lo, France and the Moselle. He was wounded at Foret de Gremercy and underwent rehab at Camp Lucky Strike in Le Havre. S/Sgt Melvin H Lachelt returned to the United States and was discharged from the Army at Camp McCoy WI. He returned to his place of birth, Glenwood MN, and passed away in 1984.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and both the Expert Infantryman Badge and Combat Infantryman Badge.
