William Preston Hicks, son of Henry and Caroline Underhill (Jackson) Hicks, was born on November 30, 1910, in Westbury, New York. In December 1940, he married Sylvia Shinkle, and the couple had one daughter, Martha Caroline. He registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. At the time, he was employed at Hicks Nursery, Inc., in Westbury. He was inducted into the Army on April 18, 1944, at Romulus, New York. He was assigned to Company G, 320th Infantry Regiment, as a rifleman and joined the unit from the 38th Replacement Battalion on November 13, 1944, while the unit was at Pevange, France. On December 1, 1944, he was promoted to Private First Class and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. Pfc William P Hicks was killed in action on January 7, 1945, southeast of Harlange, Luxembourg. He is buried at the Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg
