Edward Franklin Underhill, son of Harry Young and Mary Alice (Procise) Underhill, was born March 26, 1919 in Petersburg, Virginia. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was working at American Hardware Company in Petersburg. He was inducted into the Army February 3, 1941 at Hopewell, Virginia. He married Bernice Lee Fable March 2, 1944 while he was stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland. He joined Company L, 137th Infantry Regiment on August 11, 1944 from the 48th Replacement Battalion and served as a Light Mortar Crewman. Pfc Edward F Underhill was killed in action by artillery shell fire September 21, 1944 while fighting in the Champenoux Forest in the vicinity of Nancy, France. He is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France.
