137th Infantry Regiment, Company I

George Edwin Joy, son of Daniel Charles and Mary Sophie (Lindal) Joy was born December 28, 1915 in South Beaver Township, Pennsylvania. He married Virginia Heldegard Stolz on June 15, 1941 and the couple had a son, George Edwin Joy, Jr. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940. At the time he was working at Babcox and Wilcox Tube Company in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He was inducted into the Army January 26, 1944 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and arrived in the ETO July 30, 1944. He joined Company I, 137th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 38th Replacement Battalion September 18, 1944 when the unit was north of Nancy, France. Pvt George E Joy was killed in action in the vicinity of Gremecey, France by shell blast fragments on October 1, 1944. He is buried at Sylvania Hills Memorial Park, Rochester, Pennsylvania.
