Steve Hula, son of Frank and Mary (Surleta) Hula, was born March 15, 1923 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He registered for the draft March 30, 1942. At that time he was living in Middleville, Michigan and working at White Products Company. He enlisted in the Army January 21, 1943 at Kalamazoo, Michigan and served in Company C, 137th Infantry Regiment. He landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 7, 1944, fought in the battle for St Lo, and was wounded by shell blast fragments August 1, 1944. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 2, 1944. He returned to duty October 4 and was wounded again November 8, 1944 in the vicinity of Jallaucourt, France. After returning to duty December 1, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant, Squad Leader December 9, 1944. S/Sgt Steve Hula was reported missing January 10, 1945 and was later confirmed killed in action in the Ardennes on January 10, 1945 near Villers-la Bonne-Eau, Belgium. He is buried at Luxembourg American Cemetery.
