Bronze Star Medal Citation

Sergeant Vivian F Hoover, 37145006, Infantry, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in the vicinity of * * * , France, on 12 August 1944. After personally reconnoitering several routes in order to reach the forward slope of Hill Number 310, where his squad had been assigned the mission of establishing an outpost, Sergeant Hoover found that the only available route was exposed to direct enemy artillery fire. He chose to be the first to use the route, and was mortally wounded by enemy shell fire as he neared his objective. His leadership ability, courage and disregard for personal safety reflect credit upon his character as a soldier. Entered military service from Missouri.
