137th Infantry Regiment, Company E

Willis Homer Hibbs, son of Lawrence and Lilla Beatrice (Rudd) Hibbs, was born March 21, 1912 in Hanson, Kentucky. He married Ella Pritchard Ray September 13, 1936 and the couple had two daughters, Sue Willene and Ella Mae. He registered for the draft October 25, 1940. At that time he was living in Tampa, Florida and working at the Life and Casualty Insurance Company in Tampa. He was inducted January 14, 1944 at Camp Blanding, Florida and joined Company E, 137th Infantry Regiment from the 38th Replacement Battalion September 18, 1944 when the unit was at Remereville, France. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge October 1 and was promoted to Private First Class November 20, 1944. He was wounded in action December 20, 1944 in the vicinity of Frauenberg, Germany and returned to duty March 3, 1945. Pfc Willis H Hibbs was killed in action by a shell blast April 11, 1945 in the vicinity of Querenburg, Germany. He is buried at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park, Tampa, Florida.
