137th Infantry Regiment, Company I

Lonnie Melvin Helums, son of Toll and Mary Maude (Fleming) Helums, was born October 28, 1922 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 and was inducted January 15, 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He served in Company I, 137th Infantry Regiment and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 1, 1944. He was promoted to Sergeant, Squad Leader September 5, 1944. Sgt Lonnie M Helums was seriously wounded in action September 13 in the vicinity of Manoncourt, about 20 miles northwest of Nancy, France. He died of his wounds the following day, September 14, 1944. He is buried at Gatlin Cemetery, Ardmore, Alabama.
