Robert Louis Heckelman, son of Otto Louis and Elizabeth Ann (Wilbur) Heckelman, was born February 25, 1924 in Sandusky, Ohio. He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 when he was 18 years old and living in Columbus, Ohio. He enlisted in the Army January 21, 1943 at Columbus and served as a Rifleman in Company B, 137th Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Pfc July 1, 1944 and landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 7, 1944. Pfc Robert L Heckelman was seriously wounded August 1, 1944 in the vicinity of Brectouville, south of St Lo, France and died of his wounds the same day. He is buried at Milan Cemetery, Milan, Ohio.
