Bill Gene Hartley, son of Thomas Loren and Leona Marie (McMurray) Hartley, was born July 1, 1925 in Vincennes, Indiana. He registered for the draft when he was 18 years old on July 1, 1943 and enlisted in the Army September 23, 1943 at Evansville, Indiana. He joined Company L, 137th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman from the 38th Replacement Battalion September 23, 1944 when the unit was at Champenoux, France. He was wounded in action by a shell blast October 10, 1944 near Fossieux, France and returned to duty January 5, 1945 when the unit was at Livarchamps, Belgium, about 7 miles north of Bastogne. He was promoted to Private First Class February 3, 1945. Pfc Bill G Hartley was initially reported missing and later confirmed killed in action March 8, 1945 in the vicinity of Ossenberg, Germany. He is buried at Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
