137th Infantry Regiment, Company F

Charles Arthur Harper, son of Benton and Crystal (Byron) Harper, was born February 9, 1925 in Elkins, West Virginia. He registered for the draft February 9, 1943, when he was 18 years old and working on his father's farm. He enlisted in the Army July 9, 1943 and was a Rifleman in Company F, 137th Infantry Regiment. He landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy France July 9, 1944 and was killed in action July 13, 1944 in the vicinity of La Meaffe, France just north of St Lo. He was posthumously awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 2, 1944. Pvt Charles A Harper is buried at Elkins Memorial Gardens, Elkins, West Virginia.
