134th Infantry Regiment - Company C

Pvt Robert L Vetter was a Rifleman in the 2nd Platoon, Company C, 134th Infantry Regiment. He was with the Regiment when they departed for Europe aboard the USS General A E Anderson on May 11, arriving in England on May 25, 1944. After being billeted in Cornwall, they sailed across the English Channel July 5, 1944 and landed on Omaha Beach the following day. The Regiment first entered action during the battle for St Lo, France. Pvt Vetter suffered wounds to the head and chest from artillery shrapnel while attacking Hill 122, a critical terrain feature, heavily defended by enemy forces.

Before the war, Robert Vetter was a pitcher with the minor league baseball team, the Rochester Red Wings. His pitching career was cut short when he was inducted into the Army August 4, 1943. Robert Vetter's full biography, including his first-hand description of the battle at St Lo, is available on the website Baseball's Greatest Sacrifice.
