Robert Neil Sutherland, son of Joseph and Jessie Mabel (Schiedel) Sutherland, was born September 30, 1919 in Hillsboro, Oregon. He was inducted into the Army April 11, 1942 at Portland, Oregon. He married Edna Isobel Dunbar in California on February 7, 1944. He served as a Communications Chief in Headquarters Platoon, Company E, 134th Infantry Regiment, landing on Omaha Beach July 5, 1944, and was promoted to Staff Sergeant July 22, 1944. S/Sgt Robert N Sutherland was killed in action September 16, 1944 when a 1/4 ton vehicle he was riding in, the lead vehicle of a motorized radio patrol, struck a land mine approximately 200 yards from a bridge 2 miles northeast of Champigneulles, France, killing him instantly. He is buried at Old Scotch Church Cemetery, Hillsboro, Oregon.
